Beth Shalom

Beth Shalom is a traditional, fully egalitarian, conservative synagogue located in Squirrel Hill. All services are conducted primarily in Hebrew with the addition of some English readings. The machzor they use is Machzor Lev Shalem, published last year by the Conservative movement. Services are led by Rabbi Michael Werbow, Cantor Ben Rosner, and a large number of congregants who lead portions of the service, chant Torah and Haftarah, and blow shofar. Traditional cantorial melodies for the high holidays are mixed with a variety of congregational tunes. In addition, on the first morning of Rosh Hashanah and for Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur morning, there is a completely lay-led service in the Samuel and Minnie Hyman Ballroom where the same liturgy is used, but with a strong emphasis on communal singing and participation, including sermons and brief “teachable moments” given by congregants. A meditation service will also be offered. During Neilah services at the conclusion of Yom Kippur, all participants are offered the opportunity to pass in front of the Ark, alone or with family, for a few private moments of personal prayer.
