The Hillel JUC Welcomes Freshmen

Hundreds of freshmen flocked to Pittsburgh to embark upon their college experience, and the Hillel Jewish University Center was there to greet them. From a curbside welcome as cars arrived to unload at the dorms, to a Welcome Brunch at the Joseph Stern Building, students were greeted by upperclassmen, Hillel JUC staff and Pittsburgh community members in an effort to make the new arrivals feel at home in their new environment.

Orientation weeks for both the Univeristy of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon  University were chock full of Hillel JUC activities, with the highlight of the week being the first joint Friday night dinner, where more than 200 students are expected to attend.

And for those freshmen who promised their parents that they would check out Hillel, we are providing confirmation with student photos in front of an "I Stepped Foot in Hillel" banner.

The First Shabbat of the Year

This coming Friday night, August 28, 2009,  will be the first combined Shabbat gathering of students this year with freshmen and upperclassmen from both the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University. Students from other area colleges and universities are expected to join us as well.

We are pleased to have found an underwriter for this first Shabbat dinner, the Hyman Family Foundation, enabling us to provide this week's meal free of charge. Hereafter, students will pay a portion of the cost of the meal, six dollars, with the rest being subsidized through contributions to the Hillel JUC.  Students will be able to pay by check, in cash, Plaid Cash or Panther Funds upon arrival, just before Shabbat.  Three concurrent student-led services, Reform, Conservative and Orthodox, begin at 6:30, and students will join together for kiddush, hamotzi and dinner at the conclusion of services.
