Every Friday night, our student organize themselves for Shabbat services, which are
planned and conducted by the students themselves. In the past, dinners have been held every week and attract 150 students, on
average. It is the single largest student Jewish community event of the week on campus. It is a place to pray, make and meet new friends, and simply a
place to experience community. Your help is needed to keep this experience alive. Support our students today! |
The Future of Shabbat Meals...
Some parents may have received our latest mailing about the uncertain
future of Shabbat meals at the Hillel JUC. We are facing difficult times, like so many other social institutions. Difficult
times lead to difficult choices, and these choices will most certainly impact the future of Shabbat meals and Jewish campus
life. We are brainstorming ways to keep Friday nights as a constant for our students and will keep you updated. But you CAN be sure that we
will continue to offer services every Friday night.
We have had an overwhelming response from parents and we
are so appreciative. If you did not receive the letter and would like more information, please contact Becca Tobe. If you would like to make a donation, please visit our website. |
Hillel
Couple
Engaged
to Be Married!
Our whole student community came
together to celebrate Jesse Hervitz’s (Pitt student Hillel board member) proposal in early December to Vicki Roffe (Aephi board
member). Yes, she accepted! Their Hillel friends organized a special, surprise Oneg Shabbat so that all the students could
celebrate together. It was a joyful evening, as friends proposed toast after toast to the happy couple. They will be married after they graduate in
the spring. As you may well imagine, this kind of thing doesn’t happen that often, so we are thrilled for this beautiful couple. Your child
could be next... |

Students making challah in the Hillel JUC's kitchen. The Pitt Challah for Hunger group is made up of
students from many different clubs and committees, including the Hillel Action Committee, Delta Phi Epsilon and Alpha Epsilon Phi Sororities, Kesher,
and STAND: Students Taking Action Now, Darfur. |
Challah for Hunger!
Challah for Hunger, one of the Hillel JUC's umbrella student groups, has taken off!
First the dough is donated from Creative Kosher, a local caterer. Then the group meets twice a month to bake the challah bread. The students
then sell the yummy, homemade bread to other students on campus and the proceeds benefit the American Jewish World Service's Sudan Relief and Advocacy
Fund, which gives support to those suffering in the Darfur region. The challah-selling is also paired with educational information about the genocide
in Darfur. We are very proud of these students and the success they have had since starting the group in August. More to come! |
