The making of a Jewish State - Then & Now

We often speak of the story of Chanukah by focusing on the jug of oil. The Maccabean battle against the Hellenist was a political battle as well as a religious war. We will trace the founding of the Maccabean state and some of the intrigue that lay behind the newly founded independent Jewish state.
Jonty Blackman: Born in south Africa and living in Israel, Jonty Blackman has made a mark in the field of multigenerational Jewish education. Jonty has also lectured in various countries including Australia, Englad, South Africa, Canada and the United States.

Writer and broadcaster Mitch Albom, the author of Tuesdays with Morrie (the best-selling memoir of all time with more than 14 million copies sold), The Five People You Meet in Heaven and For One More Day, has become an inspiration to millions of people around the world. His forthcoming book is Have a Little Faith: A True Story of a Last Request. Albom is a columnist for the Detroit Free Press and the host of two radio shows that are broadcast in 38 states.

Family Ties
It's not too late to get involved with Family Ties, Hillel JUC's new program that matches students with Jewish families in the Pittsburgh area. Families can provide for a welcoming place to celebrate holidays; a connection to the Jewish Community of Pittsburgh; or simply a place to hang out, have fun, enjoy a home-cooked meal -- just a home away from home. One participating student says, “It’s heartwarming to know that if I ever need anything my ‘family’ is just a phone call away. Without Family Ties I wouldn’t feel as connected with the Pittsburgh Community as I do now.” We have several families that are anxiously awaiting their student match. The Short Life of Hitler Youth, Paul B.
Through photographs, documents and ephemera, this exhibit depicts how the Nazi state seduced an entire generation of German youth. The exhibit examines the devastating impact of the nazification of Germany’s youth, focusing on the experiences of Paul Bayer, and demonstrates how totalitarian governments strip away basic human rights and use all of their citizens for their own agenda.
