  • New Weekly FREE Prayerbook Hebrew Lessons
    Come to the Hillel JUC one hour before Shabbat services every Friday and learn to read Hebrew! Sponsored by the National Jewish Outreach Program and run locally by the KESHER student group, this class is open to anyone who wants to read those "squiggles" on the page of the prayerbook or who can read some but wants a review.

    The focus of the class will be on reading prayerbook Hebrew, in order to allow greater participation in services. We will learn the whole aleph-bet this semester! For more info contact Lauren.

    Please note that @ the Hillel JUC, we recycle white office paper and colored paper. We also recycle glass and plastic beverage containers; please rinse such containers and put them in a plastic shopping bag (if possible).
    Last but not least, we recycle corrugated cardboard boxes, so please break down and fold such boxes to put them in recycling containers.

    Pizza and Parsha

    This Thursday, YOU CAN DECIDE which of 10 talented Finalists will become Pittsburgh's first "CAMPUS SUPERSTAR!" Whether you are a friend of a finalist, love American Idol, appreciate great music, or feel the need to opine, you don't want to miss the biggest event on campus this month! Campus Superstar Finals at 7pm @ Carnegie Music Hall on Thursday, Mar. 29. The top 3 finalists will win $7,000 in total scholarships!

    Elliott Yamin, the "nice Jewish boy" who took 3rd place in last season's American Idol and released his debut album this past Tuesday, will be the guest MC for this amazing night!     Monday, Mar. 26 The Hillel JUC, Jewish Studies Program, Graduate Program for Cultural Studies, and Film Studies Program invite you to come hear Documentary Filmmaking: A Talk by Daniel Anker, who has produced and directed numerous films and television programs, earning an Oscar nomination and an Emmy Award for Best Documentary for Scottsboro: An American Tragedy. Anker's film, Imaginary Witness: Hollywood and the Holocaust, was shown at the 14th annual Pittsburgh Jewish-Israeli Film Festival. Anker will speak at 11:30am @ Cathedral of Learning Room 501. War Stories: A Pitt Sophomore Shares His Iraq Experience, 9pm @ the Hillel JUC. U.S. Army Specialist Mike Schwartz, 24, served 15 months in Iraq, mainly in Baghdad and Mahmoudiyah.     Special Summer Program in Israel

    Registration is now open for this summer’s Hasbara Fellowships Activism Training Program in Israel! Past programs have included meetings with Israeli leaders such as Shimon Peres, Natan Sharansky, Dore Gold, and Binyamin Netanyahu. Through this acclaimed program, you will acquire effective Israel activism training, learn from fellow activists from campuses across North America, meet top Israeli politicians and leaders, and discover specific programming ideas and campaigns to bring back to your campus. Come explore Israeli and Middle Eastern history and politics, and sharpen your activism skills!

    Program dates are May 28-June 12 and August 5-21. Also this summer, Hasbara Fellowships is conducting its first ever trip to Poland and Israel, June 17-July 3! Top pro-Israel university activists from across North America are invited to APPLY NOW for this summer's programs.

    Jewish Day Camp and Travel Camp Staffing The Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh is seeking staff for its J&R Day Camp (Pre-K through Grade 5) and its Noar/Bogrim Travel Camp (Grades 6-9) for summer 2007.     Emma Kaufmann Camp is specifically seeking to hire a Chinuch (Education) Director for this summer, from Friday, June 1 through Monday, August 13, 2007.
    Responsibilities of the Chinuch Director include:

    - Help create Judaic culture and programming throughout camp
    - Hebrew Language and Hebrew Signage
    - Plan and implement daily Judaic activities with each of the camper groups
    - Coordinate and facilitate Bar and Bat Mitzvah lessons
    - Coordinate and lead camp in all Shabbat services, including Friday night, Kabbalat Shabbat, Saturday morning, and Havdalah
    - Create weekly themes
    - Work with campers and staff on service involvement - Plan and implement Shabbat song sessions (following Shabbat dinner)
    - Work with Israel Culture Specialist on creative programming for individual cabin groups and all-camp settings
    - Be a Judaic research for unit and specialty area programming
    - Be a contributing member of the supervisory team throughout the course of the summer
