  • New Weekly FREE Prayerbook Hebrew Lessons
    Come to the Hillel JUC one hour before Shabbat services every Friday and learn to read Hebrew! Sponsored by the National Jewish Outreach Program and run locally by the KESHER student group, this class is open to anyone who wants to read those "squiggles" on the page of the prayerbook or who can read some but wants a review.

    The focus of the class will be on reading prayerbook Hebrew, in order to allow greater participation in services. We will learn the whole aleph-bet this semester! For more info contact Lauren.

    PeaceMaker is available! Can peace be far behind?
    After more than 2 years of design and production by CMU alumni (including the Israeli Executive Producer), the PeaceMaker game is available for online download here! PeaceMaker is a role-playing game with a high level view of the Israeli- Palestinian conflict. The goal of the player as the leader is to establish a stable resolution to the conflict and win the Nobel Prize before his or her term in office ends. The difficulty level can range from calm to violent.

    The Hillel JUC has gone Green!
    Please note that @ the Hillel JUC, we recycle white office paper and colored paper. We also recycle glass and plastic beverage containers; please rinse such containers and put them in a plastic shopping bag (if possible).
    Last but not least, we recycle corrugated cardboard boxes, so please break down and fold such boxes to put them in recycling containers.

    Pizza and Parsha
    Come together to discuss the meaning and relevance of the weekly Torah portion while enjoying fresh, hot pizza. Every Tuesday, 6-7pm in the Hillel JUC Kann Library. For more info contact Chabad.

    In only 9 days, YOU CAN DECIDE which of 10 talented Finalists will become Pittsburgh's first "CAMPUS SUPERSTAR!" That means fame, fortune ($7,000 in total scholarships), and a future so bright we'll all have to wear shades!

    Whether you are a friend of a finalist, love American Idol, appreciate great music, or feel the need to opine, you don't want to miss the biggest event on campus this month!     Thursday, Mar. 22 As the 14th annual Pittsburgh Jewish-Israeli Film Festival continues to thrill audiences, come hear True to Life: A Talk by Moshe Levinson, a successful Israeli producer whose documentary, 5 Days, is screening at the festival.     Sunday, Mar. 25 Israel on Campus (IOC) invites you to a Middle Eastern Event, 6pm @ Sphinx Cafe (401 Atwood Street) in Oakland. Come for Middle Eastern snacks, hookah, music, and games. For many grad students, studying in the US has offered rare opportunities to meet people from countries that they previously knew only through filtered media.     Monday, Mar. 26 The Hillel JUC, Jewish Studies Program, Graduate Program for Cultural Studies, and Film Studies Program invite you to come hear Documentary Filmmaking: A Talk by Daniel Anker, who has produced and directed numerous films and television programs, earning an Oscar nomination and an Emmy Award for Best Documentary for Scottsboro: An American Tragedy. Anker's film, Imaginary Witness: Hollywood and the Holocaust, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and is being shown at the 14th annual Pittsburgh Jewish-Israeli Film Festival.     The staff of New Voices magazine and the Azure Student Journals project of the Shalem Center are thrilled to announce the 2007 National Seminar for Student Journalists in New York City. Located in the intellectual and political center of the American Jewish community, the seminar will bring together the best and brightest young Jewish writers with the most prominent writers and thinkers shaping public opinion and policy today.

    This year, New Voices is teaming up with journals at Columbia, Brandeis, Harvard, UPenn, Michigan, Toronto, and Princeton to build a community of young Jewish Americans engaged in the world of ideas and writing.

    COST IS ONLY $100; scholarships and travel aid are available; housing and meals included.

    Wednesday, Mar. 21 The Matthew B. Ridgway Speaker Series presents Robert Dreyfuss, National Security Correspondent, Rolling Stone, and author of Devil's Game: How the U.S. Helped Unleash Fundamentalist Islam. Mr. Dreyfuss will discuss "ISLAMISM VS. NATIONALISM IN THE MIDDLE EAST: How the Bush Administration Is Encouraging the Former by Fighting the Latter," 12pm in 3911 Posvar Hall.

    Dreyfuss writes for Rolling Stone and currently covers national security. He is a contributing editor at The Nation, a contributing writer at Mother Jones, and a senior correspondent for The American Prospect.

    Emma Kaufmann Camp is specifically seeking to hire a Chinuch (Education) Director for this summer, from Friday, June 1 through Monday, August 13, 2007.
    Responsibilities of the Chinuch Director include:

    - Help create Judaic culture and programming throughout camp
    - Hebrew Language
    - Hebrew Signage
    - Plan and implement daily Judaic activities with each of the camper groups
    - Coordinate and facilitate Bar and Bat Mitzvah lessons
    - Coordinate and lead camp in all Shabbat services, including Friday night, Kabbalat Shabbat, Saturday morning, and Havdalah
    - Create weekly themes
    - Work with campers and staff on service involvement - Plan and implement Shabbat song sessions (following Shabbat dinner)
    - Work with Israel Culture Specialist on creative programming for individual cabin groups and all-camp settings
    - Be a Judaic research for unit and specialty area programming
    - Be a contributing member of the supervisory team throughout the course of the summer
