  • PeaceMaker is available! Can peace be far behind?
    After more than 2 years of design and production by CMU alumni (including the Israeli Executive Producer), the PeaceMaker game is available for online download here! PeaceMaker is a role-playing game with a high level view of the Israeli- Palestinian conflict. The goal of the player as the leader is to establish a stable resolution to the conflict and win the Nobel Prize before his or her term in office ends. The difficulty level can range from calm to violent.

    PeaceMaker is a finalist in Ashoka's "Changemakers" competition; it is number 11 out of 158 peace initiatives from around the world! The final stage in the competition is open for public voting, so opine here. And for more info go here.

    Students for a Safer Oakland
    A Jewish student at Pitt is starting a new group called Students for a Safer Oakland, whose mission is to provide a voice for students so they can make Oakland a safer place in which to live and go to school.     Aish Activities

    For those short on time but looking to learn more about Judaism, you can log into the Aish cyber cafe to take unique classes and LEARN and EARN $250 in the comfort of your own room. Apply here or for more info contact Rabbi Fleshel.

    Sunday, Feb. 18 Slavery still exists, and Simon Deng is living proof. Escaping after a childhood of slavery in Sudan, Simon Deng became a leading activist to stop the genocide in Darfur. Come listen to Deng as he shares his personal experiences and discusses ways for students to stop human rights abuses and genocide in Africa. Doors open at 5:30pm and Deng will speak at 6pm in the William Pitt Union Ballroom, with a reception following his presentation. This program is co-sponsored by the Hillel JUC, STAND: A Student Anti-Genocide Coalition, the African Students Organization, and Black Action Society. For more info contact Justin.

    Sunday, Feb. 18 Immediately following the program with Simon Deng, come to the William Pitt Union Assembly Room at 7pm to cheer on the 25 semi-finalists who seek to make the final 10 spots for Campus Superstar! These 25 students, from a variety of universities throughout Pittsburgh, will compete to rise to the Campus Superstar Finals, to be held on March 22, where one singer will win a $5,000 scholarship!     Beyond the Campus

    Saturday, Feb. 17 "Shaare Torah Unplugged"... in which Shaare Torah’s social hall is transformed into a chic café for an evening of entertainment and creative expression. Come hear Pittsburgher Carl Kurlander, screenwriter for the hit 1980s movie St. Elmo's Fire, talk about his Hollywood career and his recent return to Pittsburgh – to be chronicled in the upcoming documentary A Tale of Two Cities – and stick around for an open mike session including: stand-up comedy, poetry, prose and drama readings, and live instrumental music.*

    Teacher's Aide (internship) A local Jewish family seeks a student to intern on a regular basis as a teacher's aide one-on-one with a young student in the classroom at a private school in Squirrel Hill.     Jewish Day Camp and Travel Camp Staffing The Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh is seeking staff for its J&R Day Camp (Pre-K through Grade 5) and its Noar/Bogrim Travel Camp (Grades 6-9) for summer 2007.     Government Fellows Program Internship The Menachem Begin Heritage Center is excited to announce this new long-term program in Israel! The Government Fellows Program is an excellent opportunity for students from around the world to take their first steps in a government career by interning at one of Israel's ministries. The program includes a wide variety of activities for exploring Israel, as described here.

    Summer Internships in Yiddish Studies Live and learn Yiddish this summer! The National Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, Massachusetts announces an outstanding 2007 internship opportunity for college students. The Steiner Internship Program is now accepting applications for this eight-week summer internship program. Eighteen students will be accepted.
    Study Yiddish language, literature and culture intensively and work every day with the Center's own collection of 1.5 million Yiddish books. The program runs from June 3-July 27, 2007; no prior knowledge of Yiddish is required. Interns receive a generous stipend and up to six college credits, and apartment-style housing is provided.
