Rachel Smith, from North Potomac, Maryland, and her friend, Rachel Crites, have been missing since Friday, January 19, 2007. They were going to a movie in Georgetown on Friday afternoon and haven't been seen since. Rachel Smith's mother, Marian, teaches at Congregation B'nai Tzedek in Potomac. The last phone call received from the girls was traced to a cell tower in Charlestown, West Virginia.

Shabbat 1000
On Friday, February 9, more than 1,000
Jewish students and faculty members throughout
Pittsburgh's universities and colleges will come
together for a very special Shabbat dinner at CMU's
Weigand Gym on the first floor of the University
Center. Will you be one of them?
Inspired by last year's phenomenal Shabbat 1000
dinner, which drew over 750 people, this year we're
aiming to break the 1,000 attendee mark! Help us
and take pride in your community by inviting friends
to join you for this AMAZING night! The Hillel
JUC, Chabad House on Campus, and the Jewish Heritage
Program are coordinating Shabbat 1000. The free
delicious dinner will be served @ 5pm, with
Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox services

Beyond the Campus
Saturday, Feb. 17 "Shaare Torah Unplugged"...
in which Shaare Torah’s social hall is transformed
into a chic café for an evening of entertainment and
creative expression. Come hear Pittsburgher Carl
Kurlander, screenwriter for the hit 1980s movie
St. Elmo's Fire, talk about his Hollywood
career and his recent return to Pittsburgh – to be
chronicled in the upcoming documentary A Tale of
Two Cities – and stick around for an open mike
session including: stand-up comedy, poetry, prose
and drama readings, and live instrumental
music.*
Anyone over 18 is welcomed and encouraged to
perform. The evening begins at 8:30pm and the
coffee (and tea and desserts) will flow late into

Need-based Scholarships for 2007-08 The
Central Scholarship and Loan Referral Service
(CSLRS) of the United Jewish Federation (UJF) of
Greater Pittsburgh offers need-based grants to
Jewish students (undergrad and grad) who have been
residents of Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Washington, or
Westmoreland Counties for at least two years.

Government Fellows Program Internship The
Menachem Begin Heritage Center is excited to

Summer Internships in Yiddish Studies Live
and learn Yiddish this summer! The National Yiddish
Book Center in Amherst, Massachusetts announces an
outstanding 2007 internship opportunity for college
students. The Steiner Internship Program is now
accepting applications for this eight-week summer
internship program. Eighteen students will be
accepted.
Study Yiddish language, literature and culture
intensively and work every day with the Center's own
collection of 1.5 million Yiddish books. The
program runs from June 3-July 27, 2007; no prior
knowledge of Yiddish is required. Interns
receive a generous stipend and up to six college
credits, and apartment-style housing is provided. Go
