  • Speedsitting - Get PAID as You Babysit in Your Community
    In response to strong demand by parents and students following November's successful babysitting event, The Hillel JUC is bringing together Jewish students and local parents to find ideal babysitting matches. This January's Speedsitting event will be on Wednesday, January 24, 6-7:30pm @ the Hillel JUC, and an application (due by Jan. 22) is available by contacting Sahar.

    Opportunities @ the Hillel JUC Kann Library
    The Hillel JUC Kann Library needs your help. If you have a 1/2 hour or more per week to spare, please contact Lori for available volunteer opportunities.

    The Hillel JUC Kann Library has a student volunteer Library Director position open, and which would begin next fall. If you are interested in this terrific opportunity, please contact Lori by February 15 for more information. Training will be provided and knowledge of librarianship is not necessary.

    FREE Ehud, Eldad, and Gilad!
    They're Jewish, in their 20s, and their families and friends miss them. They were kidnapped by terrorists while serving their country inside Israel's borders.

    Advocate for the safe return of these kidnapped Israeli soldiers by signing a petition urging Ban Ki-moon, the new Secretary General of the UN, to demand the release of Ehud Goldwasser, Eldad Regev, and Gilad Shalit.

    Pizza and Parsha
    Come together to discuss the meaning and relevance of the weekly Torah portion while enjoying fresh, hot pizza. Every Tuesday, 6-7pm in the Hillel JUC Kann Library. For more info contact Chabad.

    Aish Leadership Fellowship and AishCafe.com
    Earn $400 if you are selected to be a part of the Aish Leadership Fellowship -- learn jewish insights, gain leadership skills, meet local Jewish professionals, and interact with an amazing group of students!     Wednesday, Jan. 17 Sisterhood and Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority are hosting an intimate discussion on diversity.     Thursday, Jan. 18 The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee presents "Quiet Heroes: Adina Pearlman," 3pm @ the Hillel JUC Kann Library. Adina, a 22-year old Israeli born to American parents, will come to share her experiences as a counselor to young adults with disabilities in northern Israel during the war with Lebanon. Adina served as an artillery instructor in the Israel Defense Forces. Come explore one of the less covered angles of the war. There will be pizza at this event. For more info contact Sahar.

    Thursday, Jan. 18 Later in the day, What Jew Say?! It's the nuts and bolts of Judaism, on a monthly basis. Tonight, come for a basic introduction to the Torah -- perfect for beginners -- 7pm @ the Hillel JUC and food will be served. For more info contact Deb.

    Friday, Jan. 19 Join friends and neighbors for "Fun-in-the-Sun" Shabbat, and bring your shades and Bermuda shorts! You'll have a chance to learn about various summer camp employment opportunities, too. Shabbat services begin at 5pm and the FREE delicious dinner is at 6pm @ the Hillel JUC.     Shabbat 1000

    On Friday, February 9, more than 1,000 Jewish students and faculty members throughout Pittsburgh's universities and colleges will come together for a very special Shabbat dinner at CMU's Weigand Gym on the first floor of the University Center. Will you be one of them?

    Inspired by last year's phenomenal Shabbat 1000 dinner, which drew over 750 people, this year we're aiming to break the 1,000 attendee mark! Help us and take pride in your community by inviting friends to join you for this AMAZING night! The Hillel JUC, Chabad House on Campus, and the Jewish Heritage Program are coordinating Shabbat 1000. The free delicious dinner will be served @ 5pm, with Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox services beginning approximately one hour earlier.

    Music Matters - 2 MAJOR Concerts/Parties

    Tuesday, Jan. 23 One of the hottest Israeli bands is coming to Pittsburgh for one performance only! Boom Pam performs original and traditional music seasoned with dueling guitars, wedding party ecstasy and a Mediterranean warmth. The band consists of two electric guitars, tuba & drums. Its infectious sound will especially appeal to those who loved Balkan Beat Box's performance in September (the two bands have shared a guitarist several times). Pitt Union Ballroom, doors open at 8pm, with Pandemic DJs spinning before the band goes on. Tickets are $12 @ the door or $10 in advance @ Caliban Books, Record Village, and The Exchange.

    Saturday, Jan. 27 iTribe invites you to Pittsburgh's first Heeb Hop Festival! Check out some of the freshest, funkiest, and most addictive Jewish hip hop sounds from around the world. Throw in a little reggae, and with DJs mastering the mix, this FREE party at the Pitt Union Assembly Room, 9:30pm-12:30am will keep you shakin', bumpin', and smilin' like a dancin' fool!     Teacher's Aide (internship) A local Jewish family seeks a student to intern on a regular basis as a teacher's aide one-on-one with a young student in the classroom at a private school in Squirrel Hill. Ideally, this aide is studying toward a degree in education, speech and language or occupational therapy. For more info contact Dana.

    Tutor (some Hebrew knowledge required) A local Israeli family seeks a student for a part time job (4 hours a day, a few days each week) to sit in class and aid a young boy who has special needs. For more info contact Leah.

    Sunday morning Teacher / Song-Leader A Reform synagogue in the North Hills seeks a teacher for a 9th grade class on "a basic review of key teachings of Judaism," Sunday mornings, from 9:15am or 10am.     Beyond the Campus

    Fundfest 2007: Help Give Hope Answer the Call. Serve the Community. Volunteer at Fundfest.
    Fundfest, now in its 13th year, is the United Jewish Federation’s single largest fund-raising event, bringing together more than 300 volunteers who reach out to thousands of Pittsburghers. Fundfest will raise funds for the 2007 Annual Community Campaign, which supports vital human services in Pittsburgh, Israel and around the world.

    Internships & Scholarships

    JEVS Internship - Summer 2007 JEVS (Jewish Employment and Vocational Service) awards a limited number of stipends to Jewish university students who expect to reside in the Delaware Valley in June-August 2007. Interns visit a variety of organizations within the Jewish communal service system. For more info and to apply ASAP, contact Peggy Truitt.

    Need-based Scholarships for 2007-08 The Central Scholarship and Loan Referral Service (CSLRS) of the United Jewish Federation (UJF) of Greater Pittsburgh offers need-based grants to Jewish students (undergrad and grad) who have been residents of Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Washington, or Westmoreland Counties for at least two years.
