Campus SuperStar is a Success!
"Campus Superstar" was the place to be on
April 6. With the Carnegie Music Hall filled, the 11
finalists
gave us a run for our money. Winner Khrista Jana
White,
a
freshman at Point Park University, won our hearts
with "I Am Changing", sang by Americal Idol Alum
Jennifer Hudson in the motion picture "Dreamgirls."
The runners up were Jennifer Cherest and Tim Ruff,
both students at CMU.
Hillel JUC Recognized By Pitt with Awards
At The University of Pittsburgh's annual "Blue Stars
and Red Carpets" awards ceremony on March 28th,
presented by the Student Government Board and the
Division of Student Affairs, the Hillel JUC was selected
for the very first time for awards.
Moreover, in our first
year out, we won not one, but three awards! Not bad,
considering over 50 organizations and individuals
were nominated!
Outstanding Sophomore Leader of the Year-
Carly Adelmann for her leadership as President of the
Vokols, the A Cappella group of the Hillel JUC.
Performance Group of the Year- The Vokols
Outstanding Cultural Program of the Year (for
the
Jonathan Safran Foer event which attracted over 500
students and community members).
Hillel Match Made in Heaven
Once upon a time there was a boy named Ed who
attended CMU and a girl named Karen who attended
Pitt. They met at the Hillel JUC and are now married
with a family... it's a true story of Ed and Karen
Leventhal! And the lovely couple came to CMU's
Carnival last week and stopped by Hillel JUC to say
hello and see the new building. If you have a story like
this one, please share by contacting Rebecca

The Vokols, the Hillel JUC's own a cappella
singing group rocked the house on Saturday, March
29th with an amazing performance at Benedum Hall
on Pitt's campus. The 150 audience members
enjoyed songs both old and new. Rihanna's pop
song "Umbrella" was arranged by the group's own
Carly Adelmann. Check out performances on
YouTube: Umbrella and Nachamu.
For fans of popular author Jonathan Safran
Foer, on the evening of February 28, everything
was illuminated as the author stopped by the
University of Pittsburgh's David Lawrence Hall for a
talk about writing, family and knowing who you are.
Foer spoke to a near-capacity crowd in the 500-seat
auditorium of excited students, community members
and professors, all wanting to get a peak inside the
brain that gave us two of the last decade's most
intriguing and literarily beautiful novels, "Everything is
Illuminated" and "Extremely Loud and Incredibly
Close."
Mud huts, pick axes and Bedouins! No, it's not the
fourth installment of Indiana Jones, but an
Alternative Spring Break in Israel. This past
March, 18 students
from the Hillel JUC participated in the JNF's
Alternative Spring Break trip in Israel, comprising
almost a quarter of Week 1's participants nationally.
250 Pitt students de-stressed before Finals Week with
Cram Jam on April 17 on the William Pitt
Union Lawn, sponsored by Hillel's Social Action
Committee. This fun event had free massages, free
Red Bull, stress-ball making, pizza and a raffle for a
final basket. Students also learned about the Multiple
Sclerosis Foundation and the MS Walk.
The Hillel JUC was proud to support several
Passover seders this year - 5 seders and a
total of
232 students to be exact! For the first night of
Passover, 60 Pitt students gathered in our building for
seder. Down the street, 75 CMU students got together
for their own seder, co-sponsored by the CMU Office
of Alumni Relations, CMU Student Affairs, the Hillel
JUC and Chabad. On Pitt's campus, Ben Miller
organized an intimate seder for 12 Resident Advisors.
CMU hosted a chocolate seder for the
second night of Passover and 25 students couldn't
resist the sweet evening. On Monday evening of
Passover, Duquesne University hosted a seder for 60
students, which was led by Rabbi Gibson. Students
savored the tastes of traditional dishes, such as
chicken, brisket, kugel... and of course some
chocolate matzah!
