Student Highlight of the Month
Our student highlight of the month is... the CMU CREW. While some already call the Hillel JUC home, "come relax every week (CREW)," is a the new weekly hang out time at the Hillel JUC started by freshmen Rachel Hoesly and Ateret Reisner. Rachel and Ateret, along with some friends, decided that it was time to start hanging out at the Hillel JUC, so they kicked off CREW with a successful improv class. Other events included a movie night and a pre-Passover chametz fest. CREW is now moving on to jazz cafes, movie nights, cooking parties, and more. CREW hopes to make the Hillel Jew Crew a real destination!

Alumni Event Review

Our Greek Alumni Shabbat was the talk of the town in March, and for good reason! Over 25 enthusiastic AEPhis, AEPis, ZBTs, and DPhiEs joined us for a Shabbat filled with good food, great friends, and real nostalgia. With alumni from the 1950's all the way up to 2006 it was a great night with friends- stay posted for the next Greek Alumni Shabbat in the fall.

"Campus Superstar" was the place to be last Thursday night. With the Carnegie Music Hall filled, American Idol's Elliott Yamin guest emceed as our 10 finalists gave us a run for our money. Winner Nick Cosgrove, a freshman at CMU, won our hearts with "I'll be", by Edwin McCaine, with runners up Rob Kurth, Duquesne, and Alyssa Thatcher, Pitt, close behind.

  • Student Program Review
  • As finals near, students are ending the year with a bang here at the Hillel JUC. Weekly "Hebreworld" sessions, conversational Hebrew hang outs, CREW events, Sisterhood, and Brotherhood events continue strong.

Our student led Passover Seder served close to 200 students, while hundereds of other students held their own seders or were placed with families.

The annual CMU Holocaust name reading had a new twist this year. Not only did students, faculty, and staff remember the children who perished in the Holocaust, but students also partnered with Amnesty and cmuOUT to place signs throughout campus in memory of the 11 million Jews, gays, handicapped people, and others who lost their lives in the Holocaust while also raising awareness about Darfur.

Play time or leadership development? This past Shabbat students "improved with improv" with Brian Fox, a workshop that offers improvisation theatre techniques to help students improve their communication in interviews, internships, and the workplace.

  • As I'm sure you all remember, Passover can be hard on campus- what to you do without mom's cooking? Beyond the "Kosher Korner" on campus, students are bringing matza brei night to the CMU University Center along with a few other kosher for Passover options.

Post Passover we're celebrating Israel- fabulous at 59! Our 2nd annual "iFest," a celebration of Israeli culture, democracy, and pluralism, will bring falafel, Israeli style house music, and hookah.

What goes perfectly with Passover and Israel? The VoKols! Our very own acapella group will have their 1st solo concert on April 14th, and they are ready to rock.

As the year comes to a close, we will say mazal tov and good luck to our wonderful Pitt graduating seniors this month, and CMU next month.
